Independent Member for Alfred Cove Dr Janet Woollard has said that the problems caused by the sale of alcohol is not just the publicans and the breweries.

“The sale of cheap cartons of beer by Coles and Woolworths shows that the retailers, particularly the big retailers share responsibility,” said Dr Woollard.

“They are reportedly promoting alcohol as a cheap drink, cheaper than bottled water.

“Everybody involved in the production and sale of alcohol has to take responsibility.”

Dr Woollard said using cheap alcohol as a loss leader to attract people into their stores is beyond belief in terms of its total disregard for the well-being of our community.

“Coles and Woolworths are well aware of the destructive nature of cheap alcohol,” said Dr Woollard.

“The liquor industry at all levels must take responsibility for the harm done by the alcohol they profit from, including the giant retailers.”
