COMMUNITY ADVOCACY
“One of my most important roles is as a spokesperson for the community on issues of concern. As
an Independent Liberal, I am proud that I have worked with individuals, families, local businesses,
community and environmental groups as well as members of Local, State and Federal
Government.”
Janet’s Record
New pathway for St Ives residents
– Janet encouraged the City of Melville to fulfil its long-standing
promise to the community to install a much-needed pathway right around Marmion Lake to
provide a pleasant area for the elderly residents from St Ives Myaree to use for recreational
purposes.
Government Charges
– Janet joined hundreds of people at a Land Tax Revolt on the steps of
Parliament to protest increases in land tax, stamp duty and payroll tax, and the fact that GST is
also charged on some State taxes, making it grossly unfair on the community because it is a tax
on a tax.
Incontinence Pad Scheme
– Janet lobbied the State Government to follow the lead of other states
to implement a subsidy for incontinence products, which are a basic necessity for more than 10
per cent of the population. The WA $470 annual subsidy is now available through Silver Chain on
9242 0242.
Social Justice
– Janet joined representatives from Amnesty International, OXFAM, the Wilderness
Society, Aboriginal groups and the Murdoch Student Guild to speak at the opening of the
university’s new Social Justice Centre, which will focus on issues of equity and fairness for
disadvantaged people.
Challenges
Forests
– Janet has called on both political parties to give a commitment to immediately cease
logging our Native Forests following the release of an Australian National University Report that
shows the potential for high levels of carbon sequestration in forest areas.
Underground Power
– Janet has called for both political parties to increase funding and to set a
completion date for underground power to be provided to the remaining 390,000 older, established homes in
the metropolitan area that currently do not have underground power.
State Renewable Energy Targets
– Janet pointed out that the Labor Government’s renewable
energy targets are deficient because they relate to the South West Integrated System, which only
covers 55% of WA’s electricity generation.
Janet’s Plan
Renewable Energy Targets
– Janet wants both political parties to give a commitment to include
100% of the State’s electricity generation in the Renewable Energy Targets. This will help reduce
pollution and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The Removal of Unfair Taxes
– Janet will fight to ensure that pensioners on fixed incomes are not
forced into the absurd position of having to sell their holiday properties to pay their land tax. She
will continue to lobby the Government to stop the State tax where GST is charged.
Truth in Sentencing Laws
– Janet will ensure that legislation is put in place to better reflect the
community’s concerns about criminals receiving light sentences due to one third discounts brought
in by the Labor Government.
